For a pop fan such as myself Killer Dreamer and Stupid Party both go in the “heavy lifting” category. Under the buzz and the fuzz and the wailing are songs I like but I have to pace myself, take them one at time. I’ve left both of these records on my mp3 player for several months and they catch me off guard every time. I suppose I’m the Inspector Clouseau to their collective Cato.
Killer Dreamer remind me a little of the Weird Lovemakers, switching out the garage influences for hardcore. The songs are concrete dense but there’s just enough melody to soften the blow. Stupid Party sound like they could pal up with the folks at S.S. Records, stretching post-punk scronk to levels that are both artsy and Neanderthal. How sludgey is Stupid Party? They have one song called “Sludge” and another called “Sludger.” Bring on “Sludgest,” I say!
