Something Fierce
Modern Girl 7” EP
Bitchin’ Riffage
This is the EP that should have preceded Something Fierce’s stellar debut album. It took a long time to surface and might get lost in the shuffle. Three of the cuts are on the album (which has since been reissued by Dirtnap), leaving only one new song, which ranks with the band’s best. In fact, this EP is a great introduction to Something Fierce. The trio of songs that overlap with the album are the cream of the crop. It takes a lot to give pop punk a good name—few subgenres outside of emo have been dragged through the mud so many times in recent years—but this Houston trio is up to the challenge. A quick re-read reveals that I’ve rambled more about Something Fierce in general than I have the new song, “Did You Know,” from this 7”. “Did You Know” is another perfect marriage of punk’s high energy and “something’s gotta give” ethos and pop’s insistence that you come away with melodies seeping into every nucleus of your being.
