The Mighty Moguls
“Rock in the Jungle” b/w “Sock It to Me, Baby” 7”
I Don’t Feel a Thing (U.S.)
Teenage Party CD
Reelin’ and Rockin’ (Japan)
Man, what gives? These records have been in steady rotation for the last year and I thought I reviewed them long ago. I realize that this oversight hasn’t knocked the earth’s rotation out of alignment as a result but why continue to press matters?
It won’t be an easy journey finding these Mighty Moguls records but it’ll be worth the bruises and expenses. First the single. On the surface we’ve got a pair of Little Richard style rave ups. Good enough to keep you from flipping the dial, right, but you need more before you quit your day job in search of obscure rock’n’roll from Japan. If you’re even considering something drastic know this: the Mighty Moguls rise above, they’re worth it. Masato Murayama works a floor tom like no other, swinging as much as rocking. Their single for I Don’t Feel a Thing is joy personified. Their CD, Teenage Party, dips its bucket in a similar well but brings up something stranger. There’s a guest saxophone player who plays really well but opts to be just a bit off-center giving the proceedings a konked out, art school, Half Japanese feel (no pun intended).
