No Contest, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Enjoy a $1 Slice

In recent attempts to branch out regarding my diet, I reached a point where I thought “After twenty some odd years, I think I’m over pizza.” But when asked to check out a pizza eating contest at the Bell House in Brooklyn, my immediate, genuine reaction was “Sounds great!” After all, what better way to learn to love something again by watching people shove piles of it down their throats? Plus, I assumed even as a spectator, I could eat for free.

Investigation led me to find out that the whole thing was sponsored by a new local company specializing in packaged condiments. “It’ll revolutionize the way you eat pizza!” they claim, which to me is a rather bold statement. But, I have a journalistic responsibility to cover something like this.

Zine of the Month Club

Last summer James Jay and I stopped at the Cyberpunk Apocalypse house in Pittsburgh on our book tour. Our hosts were incredibly nice and equally talented. Now they've started a zine of the month club. It comes to $3 a month.

The Cyberpunk Apocalypse is selling subscriptions to our new Zine of the Month club. Over the last two years the Cyberpunk Apocalypse has provided 20 residencies, including 12 month-long, rent-free residencies to writers from across the US and Canada. We have hosted countless events, and provided space for traveling writers to perform when they had none. We've worked hard to bring writers from North America to Pittsburgh, and now we hope to bring Pittsburgh writing to the people.

For $35 a year subscribers will receive a brand new zine every month made by friends of the Cyberpunk Apocalypse, plus bonus material like updates on the space, letterpress cards, or little silk screen prints.

All of the proceeds will go to the creators and the Cyberpunk Apocalypse writers' co-op. We're hoping to sell 100 subscriptions to help with various broken things — furnace, fridge, window.

Irwin Chusid (author, Songs In The Key Of Z): Outsider music is a slippery genre. It's musicians who tend to be self-taught, untrained, working certainly way outside the channels of mainstream music. There are very important qualifications: They are sincere about it. They mean it. They're not doing it to be funny. They're not doing it to be outrageous. This is a sincere musical expression. Wild Man Fischer in many ways is a poster child for outsider music.
